Check the Ministry of Law’s official Registry of Moneylenders, that’s the only definitive source for confirming a lender’s licence. Chinatown is served by two MRT lines at Chinatown station (NE4/DT19) and the surrounding streets along New Bridge Road, Smith Street and South Bridge Road are well connected by bus routes.
The standard requirements are your NRIC or passport for foreigners, proof of income, payslips, CPF statements or employer letters and proof of address. Hawker stall owners, market vendors and other self-employed individuals working in and around Chinatown can typically use bank statements or IRAS tax filings instead of payslips.
It varies but most lenders can get you from application to cash-in-hand within a couple of hours if your documents are complete. Disbursement is usually via cash or PayNow on the same day. The process can get delayed because of missing paperwork, so double-check what documents to bring before you head to the lender office.
Licensed moneylenders are only allowed to advertise on their own websites, in business directories and at their registered premises. Flyers stuck on walls, lamp posts or slipped under doors are almost always from unlicensed operators. The same goes for unsolicited SMS or WhatsApp messages. If an offer feels too easy or asks for upfront payment, walk away and report it to the police at 1800-255-0000.

The borrowing cap for foreigners earning under $20,000 a year is $1,500 across all licensed moneylenders. Those earning more can borrow up to six times their monthly salary.
