                                          The best broadband providers are the ones who are the most transparent about their products and services (including customer support!). It’s easy to switch off when niche technical language is being thrown around so it’s useful to get critical information delivered in a clear and concise way.

                                          Providers can be confusing with different levels of service and package combinations available. People end up panic buying packages unsuited to them and add-ons they have no need for (or even know about!). Make sure you understand what it is you’re buying, especially if you sign up for a long term plan.

                                          Cost of switching broadband

                                          If you’re thinking about switching providers, make sure to review your contract’s terms and conditions as you may be charged an exit fee if you haven’t yet reached the minimum contract timeframe where the fee is waived. Also, take note of any additional costs required before you sign up to your new package, especially if switching from a long term to short term contract.

                                          You may be able to get a discount if you combine your broadband plan other services such as TV entertainment packages, mobile phones or landlines. However, while combining packages can save you money, you may actually not want (or need) any of these extras and by getting them, will actually be spending more money in the long run! Bundled deals are often only provided in long term (24-month) contracts.

                                          There are 2 main types of Private Health Insurance available to expats: Local Health Insurance and International Health Insurance. So what is the difference?

                                          1. Installing Fibre Terminal Points from scratch
                                          Several years ago, the government utilised NetLink Trust to install the Fibre Terminal Point (FTP) in residential homes for free. This was to upgrade local infrastructure so that it could support fibre broadband. However, if your residence did not apply for the upgrade at the time, now you will have to pay to install it yourself.If you want to go ahead with FTP, your internet provider can help you secure an appointment with NetLink Trust. NLT contractors will then install FTP at a predefined location in your home. The cost for HDBs and condos comes to about $160.50, while landed property tends to be a bit more expensive at $288.50. Currently, if you want to get FTP installed, the only providers who provide free installation offers are MyRepublic and Singtel (with the NLT service activation fee of $56.71).

                                          2. Set up modem and router with ISP
                                          Known more colloquially as “service activation” this is also called “ONT activation.” Your provider will connect the modem to the termination point, and then this connection is shared by your router to the entire house (after which, you can connect with your devices).Watch for provider hidden fees, such as registration fees, service activation fees, and termination fees.

                                          Getting a good router is key to ensuring good speed and coverage for your home WiFi network.

                                          Make sure you have up-to-date firmware

                                          Router firmware often come with manufacturer’s updates to fix operating errors, security vulnerabilities, and other problems, this can also ensure you get the most out of your connection.

                                          Connecting via Ethernet cable to the router is a common tactic used by support teams when dealing with troubleshooting tasks and can help to reduce the list of possible issues by eliminating the WiFi itself as a source. During primary set up at your house, ethernet is first connected to the router to confirm that the internet is working before the WiFi is configured.

                                          Choose the best location for your WiFi router

                                          The best location for your WiFi router is the primary location where you or your family will be accessing the internet for the majority of the time spent at home. The fewer number of walls between the router and the main connection area the better! For larger properties, you can also consider using a signal booster to reach the more distant rooms and areas.

                                          Use your router’s in-built network monitor

                                          The router’s network monitor is built-in and very useful for visualising the bandwidth usage of different devices, including which devices are connected to the internet. Depending on its detectability, you may also be able to get details of the type and volume of data being downloaded or transferred.

                                          How long is the usual contract length?

                                          To save on cost, a lot of broadband contracts are based around 24-months. While it is a better deal than other plans that run for shorter periods, or month to month, being bound for 24 months does restrict your flexibility if you want to move to a new house or become dissatisfied with the service provider. However, shorter plans often mean the cost of installation is a bit higher, and you may also have to buy the router or connection device outright.

                                          How much data do you get?

                                          Depends on the gigabyte (GB) package you go dor. But generally, the higher the data requirement, the more expensive it is. “Unlimited” data packages are also available, although they are sometimes accompanied by an “acceptable usage policy” which may cut your off if your usage becomes excessive. Best thing to do is calculating how much data you’re likely to use so you can save in the long run.

                                          Are there unmetered options for services like Netflix?

                                          Some plans don’t tally data used watching Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or other streaming entertainment providers. Depending on your usual activities, filtering for this special allowance can let you opt for a cheaper contract as you won’t be needing to download as much.

                                          How fast will it be?

                                          Speed is out of your hands as it will vary based on the condition of cabling and wiring near your location, however will be “the best available.” Providers also tend to estimate “typical evening speed” based on maximum usage rates vs theoretical maximum service speed available.

                                          What’s the monthly cost and minimum total cost?

                                          Monthly cost is a common comparison point when evaluating different broadband packages, but it’s also worthwhile looking at the minimum total cost. Longer term contracts will also come with extra discounts, like installation fees and reducing the cost of the hardware.

                                          What connection will I get at my property?

                                          This is often limited by whatever connection your property can facilitate (or has previously installed). Not all homes or businesses will have the infrastructure to support a fibre connection so if a fast connection is a top priority for you, make sure you factor this in when you are choosing a place to live.

                                          What will I need to have in place to get fibre broadband at home?

                                          Your house must be able to support the minimum required fibre infrastructure. Then, once the broadband is activated, you’ll have to decide how to set it up in your home, e.g. the distance between the router and your devices, whether to add a signal boosting device at another location, etc.

                                          Can I take advantage of broadband bundles if I’m an existing customer?

                                          Some providers offer bundled deals that combine both broadband and home entertainment. If you are with a provider who offers this and want to upgrade your plan, double check if you risk additional fees by disrupting your current contract or if you can seamlessly move over to the more inclusive one. There are sometimes minimum contract expiry timeframes you will need to achieve with your old contract before you become eligible for a new deal.
